I’m Adam Howie, I live in Edinburgh and attend Gorgie Corps.

I first got into art as a kid when my parents got me to draw to keep me quiet during the services. As I grew up I kept my love for art but I never did much with it; it remained a constant part of my life, just not one that I focused on. Then in 2006 I had the opportunity to try being an artist full time, so I took the step of faith and started working for myself, rekindling my love not just for creating art but also for studying it.

I believe that the Bible is a beautiful gift from God. It truly is the gift that keeps on giving. The Bible was created some 2000 years ago, and yet, even today people find the words found inside relevant to them, and more amazing still, people can be saved by just reading it! Reading the Bible, and knowing our scriptures is important. How do I know this? Jesus gave us a great example of knowing the scriptures. He knew about prophecies (did you know Jesus quoted from 24 books of the old testament!).  He was found in the temple as a young boy (Luke 2:41-52), learning about scripture.

‘But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be glory now and forever.‘ 2 Peter 3:18

There are a number of different ways in which we as humans acquire knowledge and a number of different ways in which we are taught. Immediately I can think of three methods of learning.

The first is through individual academic study. When we think about school (don’t worry, I won’t make you do it for long!) a portion of our knowledge that we pick up comes from reading text books and educational journals etc.

‘To be or not to be, that is the question’ is the very first line uttered in Shakespeare’s play ‘Hamlet’. I think therefore, it is fitting for us to ponder the same question here, as we begin our journey, ‘going deeper’ in our faith.

Salvation Army churches will be posing the challenge to their congregation this year to ‘Go Deeper’. They will be exploring this challenge in lots of different ways and so we at ALOVE will be featuring a monthly blog spot that will help us look at the theme of ‘Going Deeper’ and will explore how this can be, and is relevant to us.

The idea of going deeper can conjure up a number of feelings; excitement, maybe fear, or perhaps even uncertainty.

You can fall deeper in love with someone.
