The Salvation Army for a new generation

Once Upon a Time

Our resident reviewer Grace gives us the latest on what she's watching. Youth workers look out for the top tips to help you look like you know what you're talking about with your young people if any of them are into Once Upon a Time

What am I watching right now?

My top show this summer was Once Upon a Time: it’s so good in fact that I watched all 4 seasons in around 4 weeks on Netflix. This is commonly known as binge-watching, something I consider myself an expert at - my record binge being all 6 seasons of Lost in 5 (ish) weeks and the sixth season of Glee in 3 days!

Once Upon a Time is a fantasy drama that is a new take on the classic fairy tales. The drama moves between our world and a parallel fantasy one and features a version of much loved characters like Snow White, Belle, Snow’s evil stepmother Regina and Rumpelstiltskin. Other characters are added in the later series, such as Peter Pan, Cruella, Maleficent and Ursula as an evil army, Elsa, Anna and other Frozen characters.

The story is set in the sleepy town of Storyville and the plot has many twists and turns, including the wicked step mother’s curse and the longed for ‘saviour’ to set everyone free. In addition many of the characters have had their memories erased and do not know their true identities! This is no children’s Disney show though… Season 1 has a 12 certification and Seasons 2 and 3 have a 15.

What’s the verdict?

I absolutely love this show, each season is as strange and magic as the last one. It’s full of brilliant characters who you love and root for, even the ‘bad’ ones like Rumple and Regina. My overall favourite character is Belle because she’s a bookworm like me and seems to be the most sincere of all the characters, always seeing the best in people. The only bad thing about this show is that it’s American so everyone in England has to wait months after its broadcast in America to get it here!

What my friends think?

I’ve only managed to hook one of my friends into Once Upon a Time but I’m working on that! Soon I shall have an army of Oncers (name for the fans of the show) by my side. My friend loves this show too, her favourite character is Regina but she also likes Belle as well.

What the internet thinks?

The IMDB reviews for this show are mainly good, one person wrote that Going into this show I wasn't quite sure what to expect seeing as how it was only partially laid out. However to my ever happy surprise this show is amazing, beautiful acting, terrific plot lines, and they weave it together so perfectly that you really just have to applaud the way it’s done.’ Another person said that ‘Once Upon A Time is a great TV show, it has something for people of all ages. I just love how it has mystery for you to find out.’

Some interesting facts:

  • Once Upon a Time is created by Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, the same people who created Lost.
  • It features many actors from Lost and has many Lost references in it.
  • Ginnifer Goodwin (Snow White) and Josh Dallas (Prince Charming) met on the set of this show, fell in love, married and have a son together, Oliver Finlay. It’s a real life happy ever after!

For the youth workers trying to act like you know all about this show be sure to say that ‘all magic comes with a price.’
